General Hospital & Santa Barbara Veteran, Janis Paige Passed Away

She was considered to be one of the very few surviving stars from the Golden Era of Hollywood.

Janis Paige passed away on  on June 2, according to Forbes. She is best known to Soap Opera fans as Minx Lockridge on Santa Barbara, and more specifically she was a fixture in Port Charles as Iona Delafield-Huntington; the counterfeiting aunt of concert pianist and Robert Scorpio paramour Katherine Delafield. Paige enjoyed a vast career on the silver screen and on Broadway before  working for many decades on television.

Paige’s role as Babe in the Broadway musical The Pajama Game is widely considered to be the opportunity which catapulted her fame and success. During 1957, she was a headliner at the Cocoanut Grove nightclub in Los Angeles, and it was during this time that she landed a role in the musical Silk Stockings starring Fred Astaire. She would go on to perform in many more Broadway musicals, then in 1968 she would take over for Angela Lansbury in Mame on Broadway. 

Paige would continue working for decades and guest starred in several popular TV series; Happy Days, Columbo, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Hawaii Five-O, Charlie’s Angels, The Rockford Files, Police Story, The Love Boat, Fantasy Island and Night Court. Her final theater performance was in The Gingerbread Lady, 1989, her last film was Natural Causes, 1994 and her television career ended with an appearance on Family Law, 2001.

On June 4, TCM shared a tribute to the late actress on social media, it was a montage of her classic film credits along with a caption that read “We say goodbye to legendary actress and singer, Janis Paige. A triple-threat of the stage and screen, her unforgettable contributions to the arts will endure as her legendary performance comes to a close. Look for these films on Watch TCM at tcm.com/watch.”

Paige was considered by many classic film enthusiasts to be one of the very few surviving stars from the Golden Era of Hollywood, she was 101 years old at the time of her passing.
