General Hospital’s Steve Burton Speaks Out on Kelly Monaco’s Exit

General Hospital star Steve Burton had quite a task saying goodbye to his co-star of 21 years, Kelly Monaco. Their last scenes together were like nothing he ever played. Burton spoke about the experience on the Daily Drama podcast.

Saying Goodbye To Sam

Jason and Sam were one of the most popular GH pairs this century. The couple known as Jasam captured the hearts of fans for over two decades, so it was fitting that Jason got to say an emotional farewell after Sam died of a heart attack last week.

“From the acting standpoint, I had the monologues, but I didn’t know what was going to happen,” Burton told his co-host, Bradford Anderson (Spinelli). “I was really at a loss in the sense that I wasn’t sure how to play this. Obviously, we have a huge history. Obviously, we’ve worked together for a long time. So, there’s all these things going on, but I didn’t have a clear vision of how the scene should go and going into a room where there is essentially a dead body to say goodbye.”

Burton even went to co-star Maurice Benard (Sonny) for advice on how to play these scenes.

“I did go to Maurice and I said, ‘I’m not sure as an actor where I’m supposed to be in this,’ and he said, “You’re fine. It’s going to be fine. Whatever happens is supposed to happen,'” Burton admitted. “It was a very interesting process. It was heartbreaking. And then I (Jason) ended up having to be the one to tell multiple people, which is never great. And to tell the kids, too (Danny and Scout), that was heartbreaking.”

Where does Jason go from here? He has no love interest to speak of after being back in Port Charles since March. Is love just not in the cards for Jason this time around?
