GH Recap-April 18, 2024: The Walls Close In On Sonny
Plus, Carly’s kids question her new friendship while Dex begins training. Plans for Chase’s bachelor party and wedding take shape.
When Carly Met John
Josslyn comes into Bobbie’s to find Carly dealing with a work emergency. A repairman cannot come, and Josslyn automatically picks up her phone because she knows a jack-of-all-trades who can help. Realizing she can’t contact Dex, Josslyn instead offers to step in and help. Carly wants Josslyn to focus on school and says she already has extra help. Just then, Michael arrives. Josslyn cracks, “We’re doomed” and the siblings lightly banter. When Michael mentions “Mom’s new boyfriend,” Josslyn is surprised.
Carly quickly corrects him. Michael updates Josslyn on the FBI agent who has apparently graduated to sleepovers. When he notes that Nina was the reporter of the news, Josslyn sarcastically brings up that it’s like T.J. and Willow’s “torrid affair” that Nina had previously reported. As Michael heads to the back to help out, John walks in. Josslyn playfully asks Carly if that’s the agent and Carly grudgingly confirms it is.
Carly goes over to John’s table, and he once again thanks her for helping him. They flirt, and John says maybe Carly had him beat up for questioning her. She says she’d give him a warning first, and John counters he needs her number first. Carly complies.
Josslyn and a returned Michael are observing the interaction . Josslyn wonders if Carly genuinely likes John. Michael says although he was just giving their mom a hard time, he believes they need to keep an eye on John. Carly rejoins, and Josslyn asks Carly if she thinks Sonny could have ordered the beating on John.
Carly thinks it might be unrelated to Sonny or it might not. Josslyn worries if Sonny is willing to attack an FBI agent, how he will react to the news that Dex may be joining the police force. Carly reminds Josslyn that Dex has to make his own decisions.
Police Academy
Outside the police station, Dex navigates an obstacle course under the watchful eyes of Chase and an academy instructor. He shoots at a target as Chase stops the watch. The instructor tells Dex he’ll give him the results after they have been reviewed. Chase congratulates Dex on a job well done.
Inside the station, Cyrus meets with Anna. After Laura’s encouragement, he is prepared to fill out a statement regarding his beating. Anna takes Cyrus’ statement, in which he identifies Sonny as his attacker. He also mentions the young man who had entered his room when he was hospitalized.
Cyrus implies that although the man was dressed in hospital garbs, he was likely there at Sonny’s behest. Anna assures Cyrus that the young man in question has cut ties with Sonny. After signing the statement, Cyrus asks Anna if he should leave town for his safety. Anna believes it’s unnecessary and promises to let Cyrus know when a decision about arresting Sonny has been made.
The academy instructor shares Dex’s results with Anna in her office. He tells her that Dex scored in the 98th percentile. Anna thinks the instructor means for the current academy applicants, but he clarifies that Dex scored in the top two all-time percent of applicants.
Anna thinks the instructor is still hesitant about Dex, and he confirms the reservations. The instructor wonders if Dex can survive after his former employer finds out about his career change.
Dex and Cyrus have an awkward run-in at the station. Cyrus cracks that he didn’t recognize Dex without his scrubs. Dex acknowledges he was sent on Sonny’s orders and apologizes. When he claims he has turned over a new leaf, Cyrus relates.
My Big Fat Italian Wedding
Dante greets Finn at the hospital following an appointment. Dante is glad to be returning to work, but he notices that Finn is frazzled. Finn confirms that he is in the midst of a bachelor party disaster. He explains how he had hoped to have the party at the Savoy, but the club is booked for that night for a private event. Dante assures Finn he’ll take care of it.
Dante is met with a round of applause when he arrives at the police station. He shares a warm reunion with Anna but is not enthusiastic about desk duty. Anna vows silence on Dante’s surprise bachelor party plans for Chase.
Chase states his admiration for Dex breaking away from Sonny as the two walk through the police station. They approach Dante’s desk and overhear him planning a secret bachelor party at the hatchet range.
After Dante is busted, he laments that Finn is going to kill him. A grinning Chase says he can act surprised but does a bad job with an impression. Chase invites Dex to the party.
Lois visits Finn in his office for wedding planning talk. Finn confirms Gregory and him are making plans for the rehearsal dinner on Coney Island. Lois beams that she can’t wait for him to meet her Bensonhurst posse, and Finn says they already have their seatbelts buckled. He also agrees to send Lois every email that Gregory is sending Tracy.
The discussion grows more somber when Lois addresses Gregory’s health. She hesitantly asks if she should make arrangements for another officiant should Gregory be unable to perform the job. Finn tells her that would be a good idea. They both believe Gregory will power through the ceremony “through sheer force of will.”
Gaslighting the Godfather
Trina and Ava talk shop at a café. Ava thanks Trina for helping out so much lately. Trina feels staying busy helps her with her grief, and she mentions she wants to save up to pay for her own place to live. Trina takes pride in becoming more self-reliant, and Ava is also proud of her but worries about Trina being lonely. The two discuss Ava’s living situation with Sonny, and Ava happily reports Sonny and her have settled into an easy routine.
Ava gets a call from the lab she had contacted to test Sonny’s meds. She mutes the call at first but later gets in touch after Trina steps away. The lab tech asks Ava how she obtained the pills, and Ava lies that Sonny is her husband and she’s checking his medication.
Ava seems shocked when the tech reveals that Sonny’s prescribed dosage is only 10 milligrams when it should be 50 milligrams. The tech advises Ava to look into the pharmacy that prescribed the medication.
Trina returns as Ava ends the call. Ava recommends Trina move in with Josslyn off-campus, and Trina thinks it’s a good idea. She brings up Joss’ difficulties with Dex and updates Ava on the break-up and on Dex’s plans to become a cop. Ava is especially interested by the last bit of news.
Sonny is washing up and looking worn-down in his bathroom. When he comes downstairs, he finds Lois charming one of his bodyguards. After the guard leaves, smiling, Sonny quips that Lois never knows a stranger. The two hug, and Lois immediately notices something is off with Sonny. Sonny brushes off the comment.
Lois prods Sonny about why he hasn’t responded to the invitation for Brook Lynn’s wedding. He thinks he should just send a gift: an espresso machine. Lois lets him know that it would mean more to Brook Lynn to have her “favorite uncle” there than any gift. Sonny doesn’t want to put a damper on the occasion, which prompts Lois to bring up the long list of people Sonny is not speaking to.
Sonny thinks she’s proving his point. Lois notes that while she can’t picture him getting up and dancing “the Funky Chicken” alongside Michael, Ned, or Tracy, he can put up with them for a day for Brook Lynn’s sake. Sonny then brings up the safety issue at the wedding because he’s a target. Lois counters that the security’s strong courtesy of Yuri’s beefy Belarusian contacts.
Sonny eventually relents with a smile and agrees to attend the wedding. Just as Lois brings up a potential plus one, Ava arrives. Lois needles Ava about still living at Sonny’s and suggests she consult with Lucy to find a place or stay at the MetroCourt courtesy of Ava’s “BFF Nina.” With a strained smile, Ava says she’ll take the suggestions under advisement. When Lois leaves, Sonny gives an annoyed Ava a “what can you do?” gesture.
Ava notes that Lois isn’t her biggest fan. Sonny defends Lois as an old friend looking out for him. Ava asks if Lois is right about her moving out. Sonny assures Ava he likes having Avery and her around and they should be in no hurry to leave. The two marvel at how far their relationship has come.
Sonny is amazed that he’ll even let Ava in on his routines. Ava reminds Sonny that he needs to take his meds and asks if they make him sleepy. He says they don’t anymore and believes he must be getting used to them. Upstairs, Ava watches a tired-looking Sonny take his tampered meds but says nothing.
When they return downstairs, Sonny inquires about Ava’s morning. She mentions her meeting with Trina and takes the opportunity to tell Sonny about Dex becoming a cop. An angry Sonny slams his fist on the table.
