GH – Recap May 21: Sonny goes to Dante for help with Kristina. Finn is dealt a devastating blow.
Sonny goes to Dante for help with Kristina. Kristina deals with the ramifications of what she saw. Finn is driven to drink.
Dex and Joss are in the park together, still in their wedding outfits. Dex is joking that being bloody will distract Brook Lynn and Chase from the fact that he didn’t get them a gift.
Chase and Brook Lynn are at the airport preparing to leave for Italy.
Violet is dancing around with her bouquet. Finn says they are late for school and that grandpa is still sleeping after the wedding. She asks Finn if she can have cake for lunch and wants to bring her flowers to school to show her friends. Finn talks her out of it before taking her to school. There’s no sign of Gregory.
Diane shows up at Alexis’ hotel room. Alexis is having a disastrous morning. She overslept and her clothes are wrinkled. Diane threatens to slap her. Alexis stops her there and says she is neurotic but scrappy. Diane is confident that she can get Alexis ready and then they will win, the bar will reinstate her, and her family will be proud of her.
Blaze asks Kristina how she is. She is unable to stop seeing what her father did or turn her brain off. Blaze offers her food. Kristina wants to talk to her family, but Alexis is in Albany working on her case, and Molly is out of the question since she is the ADA she would have to report it, same for Dante because he is a cop. Normally when she had problems she would speak to her father.
Sonny shows up on Dante’s doorstep. Dante lets him in, looking exhausted. He got dragged out to the after party where he drank many shots of limoncello. Sonny tries to leave but Dante asks him to stay. Sonny has bloody bruised knuckles, so Dante asked him how he enjoyed the wedding and who he had been punching.
Brook Lynn tells Chase the meaning of honeymoon as he searches his bags. He can’t find his passport. She starts to panic but he finds it. As he puts it in a pocket for safekeeping, he finds a note from Gregory. He thanks them for including him in their wedding and life. He tells them from time to time they might lose their way but together they would always have someone to lean on. The gift is a compass with the inscription, ‘with love, Dad.’
Finn returns home, calling out to his father. He brought bagels from Eckert’s. He goes to check on him, leaning against his bedroom door to listen and knock. He opens the door to find that Gregory has died in his sleep. He tells his father he loves him and cries over him.
Dante says his knuckles look pretty bad and asks about the other guy. Sonny says Dex walked away. Dante is upset because Dex is a cop and Sonny denies Dex is a cop as a cadet. He lies (or believes it), telling Dante that he was defending himself. Dante asks if he wants him to believe that Dex went after him. Sonny says it was supposed to be a happy time and Dex was everywhere. He was dancing with Lois, like he owned the party. Dex grabbed Sonny’s arm, so he hit him. Sonny then asks Dante to deliver a message to Kristina since she saw the whole thing.
Kristina says her dad finally stopped texting. Ignoring him seems wrong but she has no idea how to handle it. Blaze says it’s okay to go no contact until she can. She doesn’t know how to solve it. Blaze says her dad attacked someone and it’s not her problem to fix. She believes she has to because there’s no one else. Blaze asks her if that’s true and Kristina realizes there’s someone she can call.
Finn is on the phone, explaining that his father died in his sleep, and he needs someone sent over. He drops the phone, looking back to his father’s bedroom before sitting down on the couch. He gets up, his eyes on the bottle Carmine and Gloria gave his father. He picks the bottle up, removing the card and the cap. He inhales the cork.
Alexis appears professionally dressed. Diane asks if her pretrial jitters are something new that she’s trying out or it has been so long that Diane has forgotten that this is how she gets before court. Alexis says she is always like this, and Diane has nerves of steel. Diane admits that she screams into a pillow, and it brings all the blood to her face and makes her look great. Alexis wants to go home. She can’t stop screaming if she starts and blames Diane for bullying her into the court case. Diane denies bullying her and reminds her she merely presented an avenue Alexis hadn’t explored previously. Alexis knows she needs to give it a shot.
Finn contemplates the bottle. He pours a glass, and stares into it before taking a drink.
There is a knock at Kristina’s hotel room. Michael enters. Kristina tells Michael what she saw when she left the ballroom. She saw Dad punching Dex who was bloody and not fighting back. Jason showed up out of nowhere and pulled Sonny off of Dex so he could get away. Dad screamed that he would kill both. Michael bows his head, apologizing to Kristina for having to see that. Kristina says she believed that Sonny was capable of murder and knows that isn’t a surprise for Michael. He has always known who their father is.
Dante asks what Kristina saw. Sonny admits to kicking Dex, being held back by Jason, and the plate breaking as Kristina ran off. He chased her and told her it didn’t look like what it was. She flinched when he tried to comfort her, and she won’t call or text. He wants Dante to go to her and make her see the truth of what she saw. Dante says, “I am a police officer, and I can’t do that.” He tells Sonny he wouldn’t even if he could.
The coroner arrives. Finn explains how he went in to check on his father at 9:30. A gurney is brought in by the paramedics. They photograph the body and do an examination. The coroner estimates the death between midnight and two am. She says it was heart failure which was quick and painless. Finn signs off on the paperwork. She offers condolences as the paramedics bring the body out. Finn runs a hand through his father’s hair, and they cover up Gregory. Finn is left alone. In his father’s room, he drinks and opens his phone to Chase’s contact.
Kristina is struggling to reconcile the man who attacked Dex with the same guy who is so gentle with her. Michael says it will never make sense. He says Dad is a product of choices he made before they were born. They don’t have the power to change him. She apologizes for judging Michael for going after Sonny. She feels stupid. Michael doesn’t think there is anything wrong with her defending the man she knew and loved. Kristina thinks they have to decide what they need to do. Michael says it is not on them to clean up after Dad. She believes he needs to be punished but she doesn’t want him to be because she still loves him. She asks Michael to fix it. He agrees to try and asks Blaze to take care of her.
Joss brings coffee back to the bench for Dex. He lets her know it’s okay for her to leave if she needs to go. She spent all night at the ER with him and opened Bobbey’s to feed him pancakes. He teases her that if she stays, he might get used to her pampering him. She teases him about being a terrible dancer. They laugh and talk about the wedding. Dex shows her how easy it is to forget about Sonny and put her energy into better things. He gets a call and says so much for forgetting about Sonny.
Sonny asks Dante if he is against him. Dante is with him but reminds Sonny that he is also a cop. Whether Dex provoked him or not, whether he is a cadet or not, the whole conversation has to be entered into evidence as corroboration. Angrily he asks why Sonny would put him in this position, cuts himself off and asks what happens after Dante goes to Kristina and smoothes things over? And then what happens when the detectives interview her, does she need to stick her neck out for him too and lie to the police for him?
Michael meets Joss and Dex in the park and thanks them for waiting. He tells them that Kristina saw what happened. Joss is sorry because she kept fighting with Kristina. Michael says she is seeing clearly now so not to worry about it. He asks how Dex is and confirms what happened. Joss tells him about taking Dex to GH. Michael asks if Dex intends to press charges.
Kristina feels better after a shower and talking to Michael. She had pulled away from him because of how Michael had treated their dad. Kristina says she is lucky and calls Blaze supportive. She is concerned that all the baggage is too much for her to deal with.
Finn calls Chase. He answers and they are about to board. Finn tells Chase that Dad is gone. Chase is in denial. Finn says he came home last night, went to sleep and didn’t wake up. Finn repeats that the coroner said he died peacefully in his sleep. Chase sits heavily. Finn tells him that they took the body away. Chase asks if he felt any pain. Finn says no pain and he is sorry. Chase tells Brook Lynn that his dad has died.
Sonny tells Dante that if Dex presses charges, Diane can handle it. He doesn’t need his son to run interference, he needs his son to stand up for him. He says Kristina was shaking and she was scared. All he wants is for Dante to make her see the truth. Dante interrupts to ask what truth? That he is a good guy, that he protects his family? Sonny wants Dante to tell her that he loves her, and he was defending himself, for Dante to tell her the truth. Dante agrees to talk to Kristina. He agrees to stay with her if she needs him. He says he is done carrying water for his dad. He will not defend Sonny from the life he has made for himself.
Diane asks if she wants to give up. Alexis thinks it’s the least painful past. Diane asks if she would tell a client to quit. Diane says they will never find anyone who cares as much as Alexis does. She asks what the bottom line is: Does she want to crawl back to the Invader, or does she want to fight like hell to get her disbarment overturned? She demands that Alexis do it for Diane, for her bestie who spent many billable hours helping her. She asks if Alexis doesn’t want to show everyone how brilliant she is and get her career back while she did it.
Finn holds his father’s cane and relives their last big argument as Violet comes home from school.
