GH Recap-May 31: Shots Ring Out at the Warehouse
Plus, Sonny makes Jason an offer, and Cates interrogates Brennan. Portia and Curtis voice their concerns about Heather, while Molly, Chase, and Elizabeth express their own worries.
The Wine Grapes of Wrath
Chase meets with Elizabeth at the hospital. He needs help with some paperwork concerning Gregory’s death. Chase apologizes for interrupting her workday, but Elizabeth’s happy to help him. He admits he still feels frazzled and like he’s “underwater” because of his grief. Elizabeth sympathizes.
Their talk turns to Finn. Chase believes he made a mistake by calling Elizabeth to help Finn on the day of the death. He thinks he ambushed his brother and put Elizabeth in an untenable position. Elizabeth assures Chase that he did the right thing. He shouldn’t blame himself because Finn had already been drinking when Elizabeth had arrived.
Chase defends Finn, claiming that his brother would have never taken a drink if the alcohol had not already been in the home. He reminds Elizabeth that Finn had been the one to find Gregory. To make matters worse, Finn had to fill out the paperwork and watch their father’s body be taken away. Chase stresses to Elizabeth that Finn feels terrible for relapsing and for the way he had treated her.
Elizabeth clarifies that Chase doesn’t need to argue Finn’s case. She’s well aware of the state he was in at the time, and Finn himself had already apologized to her for his behavior. What continues to bother her most is the way Finn had reacted when Elizabeth mentioned protecting Violet. Chase is certain Finn has learned from his mistakes and will not turn back to drinking again. Elizabeth doesn’t look so sure.
Chase invites Elizabeth to the open-air memorial for Gregory, and she gladly accepts. Elizabeth leaves to get some paperwork for Chase. When she returns with it, Chase takes the envelope and laments that the details inside are all that is left of his father. Elizabeth corrects Chase that he, Finn, and Violet are what is left of Gregory. They are his most important and best legacy, and he will always be with them. Chase hugs Elizabeth.
To Kill a Conviction
At the hospital, Curtis and Portia are shocked by a newspaper headline proclaiming that the mayor is trying to free the Hook Killer. Curtis doesn’t believe that Laura would do something like this. Moreover, he doesn’t see any way that Heather could possibly be released.
Portia’s more skeptical. If Laura manages to find a lawyer to get the case reopened, then the victims would be taking on the entire justice system. Curtis claims he needs to go and leaves in a hurry. Portia is distracted by a form given to her by a nurse, which has something she didn’t order on it.
In the mayor’s office, Laura and Jordan react to the same headline. They believe someone leaked about Laura’s inquiries into Heather’s case. Now, the public is angry because they erroneously think Laura wants Heather released.
Later, Laura ends a call with an employee about a potential security breach. She takes a deep breath and tells Jordan that she is entitled to an “I told you so,” as Jordan had warned Laura about the potential backlash.
Jordan wants Laura to release a statement clarifying she will not help Heather. Laura, however, doesn’t want to make a promise she may not be able to keep. Jordan works out a compromise and gets Laura to agree to a statement in which Laura will say she does not want Heather to go completely free. Just then, Curtis enters and asks to speak with Laura privately.
Curtis wants Laura to deny the claims made in the paper. Laura says that while the headline was a lie, she is exploring whether Heather’s diagnosis could impact the case against her. While she can’t know how a judge will rule, Laura herself thinks there’s an argument for reopening the case.
Curtis is upset at Laura’s words, but she assures him that no action has been taken. If the case proceeds, he will be the first to know. Curtis is not comforted. He implores Laura to imagine how she would feel if she had watched her own daughter’s friends and family be targeted, only to learn that the daughter she loved was the actual target all along. He challenges Laura if she would want the killer locked away then.
Laura understands his feelings but is undeterred. Heather recognizes what she has done. Curtis angrily retorts that Heather’s recognition will not bring back Brando, Rory, or Britt – young people who had their lives prematurely taken away from then. Laura contends that Heather may not have had the capacity to distinguish between right and wrong. Her condition needs to be entered into the legal record, even if it ultimately impacts her sentence.
Curtis is incredulous and compares the situation with Heather to what happened with Esme. Trina opted not to press charges because Esme did not remember her crimes, and look at how that turned out. Laura insists it’s only fair for Heather’s case to be heard. Curtis shoots back that it’s not fair to Trina or Heather’s many other victims.
Laura may be his friend, but she’s wrong on this. Curtis vows that Portia and he will fight Laura with everything they’ve got. He walks out.
Back at the hospital, Portia asks for a word with Molly. Portia brings Molly up to date on the newspaper article and asks her what the district attorney’s office intends to do to ensure Heather stays behind bars.
Molly surmises a defense attorney might argue that Heather’s cobalt poisoning drove her crimes. She acknowledges that if Heather is deemed no longer a threat to society, an argument could be made for a release as well. Portia vehemently states that Heather’s still a danger.
Molly quickly assures Portia that the DA’s office would do everything in its power to make sure the conviction stands. Portia says the DA and the system owe it to Heather’s victims to fight for them.
Lord of the Spies
In Brennan’s hospital room, Cates arrives and announces it’s time for Brennan to go. He makes a crack about Brennan needing his jumpsuit because it’ll be drafty in his cell. Cates and Brennan spar about the FBI’s rivalry with the WSB. As Cates calls Brennan an imminent danger, Portia enters the room and declares her patient is not going anywhere.
Brennan smiles as Portia remains unrelenting, despite Cates’ assertion that Brennan poses a security risk. She reminds the agent that Brennan is handcuffed and under heavy guard. More importantly, he suffered a serious injury and will not be released until she receives the go-ahead from his surgeon. “The patient stays here,” she firmly states, then leaves.
An angry Cates closes the door as Brennan protests that he needs his rest. Cates insists on questioning Brennan, but Brennan won’t say a word without his lawyer present. Cates wonders why Brennan has spent so long cooling his heels in jail without a hearing on his case. He speculates that Brennan is getting the lawyers to stall and demands to know why.
Brennan remains unfazed as Cates guesses that Brennan’s biding his time and waiting for something. Cates goes on to detail the charges against Brennan, which include criminal conspiracy and attempted murder. Brennan asserts his innocence of all the charges and attributes the situation with Carly to an unfortunate misunderstanding.
Cates grills Brennan about the attempted hit on Dante and Anna. Brennan shrugs it off and says he was unarmed on the pier. Anna, on the other hand, held him at gunpoint at point-blank range. He implies Anna is “an excellent shot” who knew exactly what she was doing. Cates wonders about Anna and Brennan’s prior association.
Cates insinuates that Anna’s appearance on the pier may not have been happenstance. He then directly theorizes about a potential partnership between Anna and Brennan, with the intended end game being Anna assuming control of Pikeman. Brennan is cagey and tells the agent to direct his questions to Anna.
Of Mobsters and Men
Molly approaches Carly at the MetroCourt. She wants Carly to tell her about what happened at the wedding with Kristina and Sonny. Carly isn’t sure what information she can provide, as she wasn’t there. Molly knows that Jason likely told Carly everything. Carly is extended family to Molly, and she has known Carly her whole life.
Since Molly feels she can’t ask Kristina, she is coming to Carly for answers. Carly relents but warns Molly that she will “forget everything” if Molly takes what she says to the DA. Molly reassures her the conversation will stay between them.
Carly relays how she had gotten a phone call from Jason that night. He had told her about the assault and about Sonny’s threats. He had also said that Kristina witnessed the whole thing and that Sonny had run after her.
Carly then updates Molly about her conversation with Sonny, in which he had revealed how upset Kristina had been in the restroom. Carly and Molly agree that Kristina was traumatized because she had compartmentalized and had never seen the “mobster” side of Sonny up-close before.
Carly says Kristina is a “daddy’s girl” who would have eventually had to gain a more realistic view of her father. She’s just sorry that it happened now. Carly asks Molly what she’s going to do. Molly tearfully says she’ll “sit on it.” She doesn’t want to cause more friction with T.J. or more stress for Kristina, so she’ll have to hope for the best.
Carly smiles and says Molly’s already thinking like a mom. Molly thanks her for the honesty and the compliment.
Later, Molly meets with T.J. at the hospital because they had gotten each other’s phones mixed up. She fills him in on Alexis’ hearing. T.J. looks at his phone and is surprised because he had expected to hear from Kristina. He thinks they should clear their schedules and go to Kristina’s next appointment.
Molly cautions him about boundaries. T.J. just wants to know that Kristina’s OK. Molly lies that she’s fine.
At the warehouse, Sonny strides in and interrupts Jason’s work. Sonny claims he wants to “clear the air” with Jason. He lets Jason know that he made a deal with Dex, and he will let Dex do whatever he wants. Jason seems pleased by the news. Sonny goes on to say he wants to make the same deal with Jason.
If Jason wants to work with the FBI, Sonny won’t stand in his way. But Sonny wants nothing more to do with Jason. In fact, he wants Jason to sell his stake in the coffee business.
Jason outright refuses and reminds Sonny that they started the business together. Sonny doesn’t care, as the business was built on trust. The trust has been broken between them. Jason insists that he’s staying, and he’s staying for Sonny’s sake. Before he came back, the business was in shambles. They need it functioning as a legitimate operation to protect Sonny.
Sonny rages that Jason’s a spy, and he wants him gone. Jason urges Sonny to let him help. He tries to reason with Sonny: “I am your friend as long as I can remember, and I am telling you that you’re in trouble.” He stresses that the Sonny he knew would not have attacked Dex in such an open place, surrounded by friends and family.
Jason reminds Sonny of his “sloppy decisions” and how they have damaged his relationship with Kristina. He again offers his aid. Sonny scoffs and says he tried to be friendly, but he won’t be so friendly anymore. “Get out of my way or you are done and gone,” Sonny promises in a menacing tone. After Sonny stalks off, Jason sighs in frustration.
Sonny goes to the MetroCourt and runs into Carly, who asks him if he’s talked with Kristina. He admits he hasn’t yet and pronounces he’s dealing with Jason. Carly wants to know what Sonny means. He shrugs and says he made an offer that Jason refused. “Whatever happens next is on him,” Sonny pledges.
Back at the warehouse, Jason is pacing and stops suddenly. He looks around. A man with a gun is hidden behind some coffee bags. Jason pulls out his gun and takes cover when the man starts shooting. The men exchange fire as the sound of gunshots booms through the room.
