GH Recap-May 9: Jason Tells Sam the Truth, Jordan Cautions Laura
Plus, Ava and Natalia’s wedding invites get lost in the mail. Gregory makes a decision, while Alexis comforts Finn.
A Tangled Webber
Laura visits with Alexis. She congratulates Alexis on her efforts to regain her law license and hopes for success. Laura takes the discussion as an opportunity to broach the subject of Heather. Laura is even more certain that the cobalt poisoning played a major role in Heather’s crimes. Alexis asks if Laura is suggesting the poisoning made Heather a killer for decades.
Laura only knows that Heather is showing a conscience. She wonders what Alexis thinks as a legal professional. Alexis admits that her research turned up two similar cases where expert witnesses recanted their testimony because of new scientific evidence. Alexis says she will look into Heather’s court appearance, but she warns Laura that a judge is unlikely to vacate a sentence when the defendant confessed to the crimes.
Alexis believes they can’t write off Heather as a free spirit since her crimes go back so far. As a citizen of Port Charles, she is reluctant to help. But as an attorney, Alexis believes everyone—including Heather—is entitled to a proper defense.
Later, Laura is in her office. As she ends a phone call about Heather, Jordan arrives. Laura is pleased to hear about Jordan’s progress with the urban renewal project. Laura explains her phone call was about expert testimony in Heather’s previous trial. Jordan is curious as to why Laura is interested. Laura updates Jordan on the hip replacement and the subsequent cobalt poisoning, which might mitigate Heather’s actions.
Jordan too is taken aback at Laura’s implication Heather is not responsible for her crimes. Jordan says she can’t be objective because of Heather’s threats against Curtis’ family and because of her murder of a police officer. She reminds Laura that the families of Heather’s victims will feel even more strongly.
Laura acknowledges the potential conflicts but seems determined to help Heather. Jordan further cautions Laura that her rivals will pounce on the case, and her constituents will be unhappy as well. She deems Laura’s advocacy for Heather “political suicide” and pleads with her boss not to throw her career away “for the likes of Heather Webber.”
Like Father, Like Sons
At Finn’s apartment, Finn and Chase debate who is going to tell Gregory he should not attend the rehearsal dinner. Gregory enters with his walker, and his sons quickly switch to acting happy about the upcoming trip to Coney Island. Chase says Finn wants to tell Gregory something, which prompts Finn to shoot a look at his brother. Gregory asks his sons to let him speak first, as he has something on his mind.
Gregory brings up what a happy event the trip will be. Finn and Chase try to interrupt, but Gregory quiets them and admits he doesn’t think he should go on the trip. He wants to conserve his energy and for Chase to have a good time. He asks Chase to give Brook Lynn’s family his apologies. Chase, clearly relieved, assures Gregory he understands and that everyone else will too.
Finn adds that Gregory made the right decision. When he suggests calling someone to stay with his father, though, Gregory gets angry. Finn invokes wedding etiquette and implies Chase should be able to enjoy the dinner without worrying about Gregory. The argument escalates when Gregory reminds Finn of his own wedding etiquette before Gregory’s wedding, when Finn bedded his father’s soon-to-be wife. Chase can only look on in shock as a hurt Finn leaves.
Gregory apologizes to Chase after Finn’s departure. He regrets overreacting and ruining Chase’s pre-wedding plans. He insists he just needs rest and not the oversight of someone watching over him like he’s a toddler. Chase also has regrets about asking Gregory to officiate, as he now feels he put too much pressure on his father. Gregory assures Chase officiating will be the greatest honor of his life. He reconsiders having someone stay with him for the night.
A dejected Finn shows up at Alexis’ place after Laura leaves. He fills Alexis in on his latest clash with Gregory. He feels like he abandoned his father again, but Alexis thinks he just walked away from “an unwinnable argument.” Finn blames himself for his distance from Gregory all these years and reminds Alexis he even changed his name because he was angry at his father for moving on from his mother’s death.
Alexis in turn reminds Finn that both Gregory and he have forgiven each other and forged a better relationship. She relates to Finn her own struggles with her daughters through the years. She thinks Gregory only lashed out at Finn because he felt secure in their relationship now. Finn is still upset and wants to attend a meeting, but he feels guilty for worrying about himself when Gregory will have no one to watch after him while the family is gone.
Alexis brightens, says she has an idea, and calls Gregory. She asks Gregory if she can come over so he can help her prepare for her upcoming court appearance. Gregory eventually agrees, and Alexis gives Finn a thumbs up.
Mami Knows Best
Natalia knocks on Blaze’s hotel room door and asks jokingly if it’s safe to enter when her daughter answers. Blaze assures her it is since Natalia knocked this time and invites her mother in. Natalia immediately begins talking wedding attire, which confuses Blaze as she didn’t know Natalia had been invited to the wedding. Natalia assumes she will be going as Blaze’s plus-one, but Blaze says she’s attending with Kristina.
When Blaze mentions her girlfriend being her plus-one, Natalia bristles and suggests it’s not a good idea to take Kristina to a public event. She thought Blaze and she had an understanding. Blaze thought the same, but she had been wrong. Blaze gets Natalia’s worries because life for a queer person can still be difficult, even in the 21st century. Natalia recoils at the word “queer” and asks that Blaze not refer to herself that way.
Blaze defends her decision by claiming the wedding is a family event, not a public outing, and the Quartermaines value their privacy. Natalia thinks Blaze is being naïve because the Quartermaines are public figures and the wedding will be plastered all over social media by guests, as well as in the papers. Blaze stands firm in going with Kristina, and Natalia implores her to think about her “brand.”
Blaze gets angry at Natalia’s insinuation that she should use Brook Lynn’s wedding as publicity and a photo op. While she appreciates everything her mother has done for her, she needs to make her own decisions about her life, including this one. She doesn’t believe anything she has done with Kristina will hurt her career. In fact, her career is on the rise and her fans are clamoring for more music.
Blaze attributes the good fortune to being happy with Kristina. Natalia snaps that happy musicians can’t make good music, and Blaze asks if her mother is claiming she has to be miserable to be successful. Natalia tells Blaze to do what she wants, and they will see which one of them is right. She walks out.
Birds of a Feather Don’t Flock Together
At the Metro Court, Ava and Sonny are dining together. Ava tells him she can do an art commission for his donation, but Sonny looks at Jordan and says he has other plans. Olivia approaches and chats with Sonny about the wedding, while giving the cold shoulder to Ava. When Ava steps away, Olivia wants assurances from Sonny that he won’t be bringing Ava to the wedding. He promises he won’t invite Ava.
Olivia hastily departs when Ava returns. Ava smiles and says she has a dress ready if Sonny needs a plus-one. Sonny says it won’t be necessary because Ava’s not going. Ava is upset, but Sonny reminds her that Connie’s family and friends will be at the wedding and they all have long memories. Ava defends that there was never any proof against her for Connie’s death and implies Connie’s family should move past it since it had happened so long ago.
Sonny retorts like Ava should let go of what Ryan did to Kiki. Ava is infuriated that Sonny invoked her daughter’s memory in such a way and says maybe she should move out. Sonny coldly states that Ava is free to go anytime. He’ll buy her a place, or perhaps Avery should stay with him. Ava hisses she will take care of her daughter and storms off.
Later, Sonny catches sight of Natalia and asks her to join him. She accepts with a big smile.
Some Stone Cold Truths
Sam rushes into the coffee warehouse and demands to know Danny’s whereabouts. Jason is confused, and Sam tells him the school counselor called and said Danny wasn’t in his first class. Sam had also found Danny’s phone under his pillow. She thinks Danny is trying to see Jason again.
Jason reasons with Sam that Danny is lying and acting out because he’s forbidden from seeing his father. Danny feels as if everything he does is wrong. Jason suggests Sam ease the tension by allowing Danny to spend time with him. He thinks Danny just wants his freedom, while Sam wants to control Danny. Sam shoots back that Jason knows nothing about raising a teenager or about his son.
Sam further lashes out that if Jason thinks he knows Danny so well, he should be able to tell her where their son is now. She angrily reminds Jason of how he had encouraged Danny to lie to her. Jason doesn’t see Danny as a danger-seeker like Sam does. Sam wants Jason’s assurance that Danny won’t be in danger in Jason’s presence. Jason admits he can’t guarantee that.
Sam is relieved when she receives a call from the counselor about a miscommunication. Danny is fine and at school. She expects an ‘I told you so’ from Jason, but Jason is only glad that Danny’s okay. Sam wonders where Sonny is, and she’s surprised to learn that Jason and Sonny are on the outs.
Sam deduces the tension is due in part to Dante’s shooting. Jason opens up and tells Sam that he had been working as an FBI informant. He won’t go into further detail about the reasons why, but he wants Sam to know that he didn’t voluntarily stay away from his family. Sam apologizes for doubting Jason but insists she still wants to maintain boundaries with Danny. Jason agrees to honor her wishes.
After she leaves the warehouse, Sam makes a phone call. She needs to see the person immediately.
