Is Carly Being Targeted? Was The Cates Attack Near Corinthos HQ Orchestrated?

In recent times, not a day goes by without a Sonny altercation. So it’s not a far stretch for Josslyn to assume FBI Agent Cates is just another Sonny victim when she learns Carly found him assaulted and helped him to safety. Which then leads her spiral out over what Sonny would do to Dex now that he is on the force at the Port Charles PD. And, while Anna struggles with her feelings over what to do about everything in relation to the Sonny situation, there is one question that needs attention: What is FBI Agent John Cates (formerly Jagger) really up to?

Was Carly targeted by Cates? Now, Sonny may be capable of roughing up an FBI agent, but after all, it was Carly alone who found him injured, but not robbed, near Corinthos coffee. And, suddenly he’s roaming around the hotel room in a towel, spending time at Bobbie’s and laying on the charm for Carly. While Michael is suspicious, Josslyn is singularly focused on Dex’s wellbeing which is so helpful to her mother. However, what if Sonny had nothing to do with it, and it was all staged? What if it were all a ploy to play on Carly’s loneliness, and her sadness and struggles over losing the Metro Court?

Though nothing happened that night between Carly and Cates at the Metro Court, perhaps Nina’s radar and chidding wasn’t far off, this time. There did seem to be a bit of chemistry and perhaps a bit of Florence Nightingale concern on Carly’s part. She seems to be struggling to find her place, even now that Jason has returned her to her previous helm at the hotel.

There must be other people and motives at play. It can’t be a Sonny plot as he is in no shape to orchestrate or contrive anything. He’s so obsessed with Michael and Jason’s so called betrayals, and he wouldn’t surreptitiously plot against Carly. There would be no need, he has no problem confronting her directly, in private or public, as he did at the Metro Court just when she broke the news to Olivia that she was back. However, Sonny’s declaration that their story has ended for good, may be his undoing if the goal is for Cates to use her to get intel on Sonny’s organization. Perhaps Carly won’t be so quick to protect Sonny as she has in the past. 

However, romance will definitely be on the backburner for Carly. She has plenty to draw away her focus. So, whomever is really pulling the strings on this plot may have to play the long game, especially now that Jason has resurfaced. Though the timing of the two men returning is quite a coincidence. 

Who is behind all of this? Could it be Robert Scorpio? Or does this have something do from deeper in Cates’ past when he was known as Jagger?
